Painting Description
"The Massacre of the Innocents" is a notable fresco by the Italian Mannerist artist Daniele Ricciarelli, better known as Daniele da Volterra. This work of art, painted circa 1557, is housed in the Oratory of San Lorenzo in San Giovanni Valdarno, Italy. The fresco depicts the biblical episode of the Massacre of the Innocents, as recounted in the Gospel of Matthew (2:16-18), where King Herod the Great orders the execution of all young male children in the vicinity of Bethlehem in an attempt to eliminate the newborn Jesus, whom he sees as a threat to his throne.
Daniele da Volterra, a close associate of Michelangelo, is often remembered for his role in partially covering the nudity in Michelangelo's "The Last Judgment" with vestments and drapery, earning him the nickname "Il Braghettone" (the breeches maker). However, his work on "The Massacre of the Innocents" stands on its own as a powerful example of Mannerist art, characterized by its complex composition, elongated figures, and heightened emotional intensity.
The fresco is remarkable for its dramatic portrayal of the tragic event, with a strong emphasis on the emotional turmoil experienced by the mothers and children. Da Volterra's use of chiaroscuro – the contrast of light and shadow – enhances the three-dimensionality of the figures and adds to the overall sense of movement and chaos within the scene. The artist's ability to convey the raw human emotion and the brutality of the massacre is considered one of the work's most compelling attributes.
"The Massacre of the Innocents" by Daniele da Volterra is an important work in the study of Mannerism and Renaissance art, reflecting the artist's technical skill and his capacity to engage viewers with a poignant historical and religious subject. Its preservation in the Oratory of San Lorenzo allows for continued appreciation and analysis by art historians and enthusiasts alike.
