Painting Description
"Nymphéas" (Water Lilies) refers to a series of approximately 250 oil paintings by French Impressionist artist Claude Monet (1840–1926). The paintings depict Monet's flower garden at his home in Giverny and were the main focus of Monet's artistic production during the last thirty years of his life. Many of the works were painted while Monet suffered from cataracts.
The Nymphéas series is one of Monet's most famous and iconic works, capturing the play of light and shadow, and reflections from the sky and trees on the pond surface. Monet's water lilies paintings vary greatly in size, mood, and color, from light and airy to dark and reflective. The paintings are housed in museums all over the world, including the Musée de l'Orangerie in Paris, where they are displayed in two oval rooms, providing a panoramic view of the water lilies that was revolutionary in its immersive quality.
Monet's dedication to capturing the French landscape led him to reject traditional compositional techniques and instead focus on the abstraction and the changing effects of light and color. This approach culminated in the grand scale and extended focus of the Nymphéas series, making it a cornerstone of the Impressionist movement and a precursor to the various forms of abstract art that would dominate the 20th century.
