Painting Description
"Les Nymphéas" (English: "The Water Lilies") is a series of approximately 250 oil paintings by French Impressionist artist Claude Monet (1840–1926). The paintings depict Monet's flower garden at his home in Giverny and are among the most recognized and celebrated works of the 20th century. They were the main focus of Monet's artistic production during the last thirty years of his life.
Monet's garden at Giverny, with its water lily pond and Japanese bridge, became the subject of his work after he moved there in 1883. He purchased additional land with a pond in 1893 and transformed it into a water garden with exotic plants, including water lilies, which became the inspiration for the series. The "Les Nymphéas" series captures the reflections of the sky and the surrounding plants on the pond's surface, a testament to Monet's continued interest in capturing the effects of light and the perception of nature.
The paintings vary in size, some reaching monumental proportions. Monet's innovative composition of the water lilies—often with an all-encompassing view of the pond—broke away from traditional Western painting where the subject is usually centered. Instead, Monet's radical approach allowed the water's surface to take over the canvas, inviting the viewer into an immersive experience.
Monet's dedication to the "Les Nymphéas" series intensified after the turn of the century, and by the 1910s, he had conceived a plan, known as the "Grande Décoration," to donate a series of large-scale Water Lilies panels to the French state to be housed in a specially designed space. This culminated in the installation of the "Orangerie" cycle at the Musée de l'Orangerie in Paris after his death, which consists of eight large panels arranged in two oval rooms, providing a panoramic view of the water lilies that surround the viewer.
The "Les Nymphéas" series has been displayed in numerous galleries worldwide and remains a major draw for art enthusiasts. The works are considered to be both a climax of Impressionism and a forerunner to the various forms of Abstract art that would dominate the 20th century. Monet's exploration of light, color, and fluidity in these paintings has had a profound impact on the development of modern art.
