Painting Description
"Julie d'Angennes as Astree" is a 17th-century oil painting by French artist Claude Deruet, created in 1625. The painting is a portrait of Julie d'Angennes (1607–1671), the daughter of Charles d'Angennes and Catherine de Vivonne, who were prominent figures in the literary and social circles of early 17th-century France. Julie d'Angennes was celebrated for her beauty and wit and was a central figure in the literary salon held by her mother, the Marquise de Rambouillet.
In this portrait, Julie d'Angennes is depicted as the character Astree from the pastoral novel "L'Astrée" by Honoré d'Urfé, which was immensely popular during the time. The novel is set in a fictionalized version of the Forez region in France and tells the story of the shepherd Céladon and the shepherdess Astree, whose love is marked by various trials and tribulations. The portrayal of Julie as Astree reflects the contemporary fashion of portraying aristocratic women as characters from mythology or literature, emphasizing their education, refinement, and the cultural aspirations of their class.
Claude Deruet (1588–1660) was a renowned painter from Nancy, who worked at the court of the Duke of Lorraine. His work is characterized by the elegance and richness of the Baroque style, and he was known for his portraits, religious scenes, and allegorical compositions. "Julie d'Angennes as Astree" is a fine example of Deruet's portraiture, showcasing his skill in capturing the grace and sophistication of his subjects.
The painting is notable for its detailed rendering of Julie d'Angennes' attire, which reflects the fashion of the French aristocracy in the early 17th century, as well as for its allegorical elements that link the subject to the character of Astree. The work is an important piece of art historical evidence of the cultural practices of the French elite during the reign of Louis XIII and provides insight into the interplay between literature, portraiture, and identity in early modern France.
