Charles Walter Stetson was an American artist born in Tiverton, Rhode Island, in 1858. He was known for his paintings, which often explored themes of mythology, allegory, and the human condition, reflecting the influence of the Symbolist movement in late 19th-century European art. In 1884, Stetson married Charlotte Perkins Gilman, a prominent writer and social reformer. The marriage was troubled from the start, partly due to their differing views on gender roles and artistic temperaments. Their daughter, Katharine Beecher Stetson, was born the following year. The strain of their relationship and Stetson's inability to provide financial stability through his art led to their separation in 1888, and they divorced in 1894. This period was marked by emotional turmoil for Stetson, which deeply influenced his artistic output, infusing his work with a sense of personal struggle and introspection.

After his divorce, Stetson relocated to Europe, where he became part of an international circle of artists and writers. He lived and worked in Italy for several years, where he was particularly inspired by the Renaissance masters. This European sojourn was a period of significant artistic growth for Stetson, allowing him to refine his style and explore new themes in his work.

Upon his return to the United States, Stetson settled in Pasadena, California, where he remained until his death in 1911. During this final phase of his career, he continued to produce works that were both critically and commercially successful.
