Painting Description
"Julcee Mathla" is a portrait painting by Charles Bird King, an American painter known for his depictions of Native American leaders and significant figures in the early 19th century. The painting is part of King's body of work that aimed to document the appearance and cultural attire of Native Americans, many of whom were visiting Washington, D.C., as delegates to negotiate treaties with the United States government.
Charles Bird King (1785–1862) was commissioned by the Bureau of Indian Affairs to create portraits during a period when the government was interested in the "civilizing" policy towards Native Americans. King's portraits are significant historical records of these individuals and are noted for their attention to detail and the dignified portrayal of his subjects.
"Julcee Mathla," also known as Jumper, was a Seminole leader, and his portrait is particularly important as it captures the likeness of a key figure during a turbulent time in Seminole history. The Seminole people were engaged in efforts to resist removal from their lands in Florida, which eventually led to the conflicts known as the Seminole Wars.
The painting itself is characterized by King's use of rich colors and fine brushwork to depict the intricate details of Julcee Mathla's attire, which often included elements significant to Seminole culture and identity. As with many of King's portraits, the background is typically subdued, focusing the viewer's attention on the subject.
The portrait of Julcee Mathla is part of a larger collection of Native American portraits that were once housed in the Smithsonian Institution's Indian Gallery. Unfortunately, many of King's original paintings were destroyed in the Smithsonian fire of 1865. However, the importance of King's work was recognized prior to the fire, and lithographs were made of many of the portraits, allowing the images to be preserved and disseminated.
Today, Charles Bird King's portraits, including that of Julcee Mathla, are considered invaluable records of Native American leaders of the 19th century and are studied for their artistic merit as well as their historical significance. The portraits serve as a reminder of the complex and often difficult relationships between the United States government and Native American tribes during a period of significant change and conflict.
