Painting Description
"The Entombment" is a renowned painting by the Italian Baroque master Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, usually known simply as Caravaggio. Created circa 1603–1604, this masterpiece is also known as "The Entombment of Christ," and it is considered one of Caravaggio's most significant works, showcasing his dramatic use of chiaroscuro and his powerful, realistic depiction of biblical scenes.
The painting depicts the moment after the Crucifixion when the body of Christ is being placed in the tomb. Caravaggio's composition is remarkable for its emotional intensity and for the way it brings the viewer into close proximity with the event. The figures are arranged in a shallow space, with the dead Christ at the center, his body held by Nicodemus and John the Evangelist, while Mary of Clopas raises her arms in despair, and Mary Magdalene, identified by her signature red hair, grieves intensely. The Virgin Mary is portrayed to the right, her face a study in restrained sorrow.
Measuring approximately 300 cm × 203 cm (118 in × 80 in), the painting is housed in the Vatican Pinacoteca, Vatican City. It was originally commissioned for the chapel of Pietro Vittrice in the church of Santa Maria in Vallicella, also known as the Chiesa Nuova, in Rome.
Caravaggio's "The Entombment" is a prime example of his ability to convey complex human emotions and to create a sense of immediacy. His use of light not only highlights the physicality of the figures but also adds a spiritual dimension, suggesting divine presence in the darkness surrounding the scene. The work has been widely studied and admired for its innovative approach to the biblical subject, its technical mastery, and its profound impact on the development of Baroque art.
