August von Pelzeln was an Austrian ornithologist and zoologist born on August 22, 1825, in Vienna, Austria. Not traditionally known as a visual artist, Pelzeln contributed significantly to the natural sciences, particularly in the study and classification of birds.

He became associated with the Imperial Natural History Museum in Vienna (now the Natural History Museum, Vienna), where he had access to one of the largest bird collections in Europe at the time.
