Antonio (Il Tenente) Morghen Paintings

Antonio Morghen, also known by the nickname 'Il Tenente' which translates to 'The Lieutenant,' was an Italian engraver born in Florence, Italy, in 1721. He hailed from a family steeped in the arts; his father Filippo Morghen was a respected engraver, and his brother Francesco Morghen also pursued a career in the same field. Antonio initially trained under his father before moving to Rome to further his education and skills in the arts. It was in Rome that he honed his expertise in engraving, studying under the famous French engraver Jean-Baptiste Scotin.

Morghen's work was characterized by its precision and attention to detail, qualities that soon earned him a reputation as a master engraver. He was particularly known for his reproductive engravings, which means he created prints based on the works of other artists. Through this medium, Morghen played a significant role in disseminating the works of Italian masters to a broader audience.
