Antonin Gareis, also known as Anton Gareis or Antonín Gareis, was a Bohemian painter born on September 1, 1762, in Chomutov, which was then part of the Habsburg Monarchy and is now in the Czech Republic. Gareis was primarily known for his landscape paintings, which were influenced by the Dutch landscape tradition and the emerging Romantic sensibilities of his time.
Gareis received his early artistic training in Prague before moving to Vienna to further his studies. In Vienna, he was influenced by the works of other landscape painters and the artistic circles that were prominent in the Austrian capital during the late 18th century. Gareis' landscapes were characterized by a meticulous attention to detail and a harmonious palette that reflected the beauty of the natural world.
After establishing himself as a landscape painter, Gareis became a member of the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague in 1807. His reputation grew, and he was commissioned to create works for various patrons, including members of the European nobility. His paintings often depicted the Czech countryside and were appreciated for their peaceful and idyllic qualities.
Antonin Gareis continued to work and exhibit his paintings throughout the early 19th century. However, details about his later life and career are less documented compared to his early and mid-career. Gareis passed away on January 2, 1825, in Vienna, leaving behind a body of work that would influence Bohemian landscape painting and contribute to the region's artistic heritage. His works are part of several museum collections and continue to be studied for their contribution to the landscape genre in Central European art.
