Painting Description
"Jean-Henri (1725-1805) Chevalier de Latude, 1789" is an oil on canvas portrait by the French painter Antoine Vestier, created in 1789. The painting depicts Jean-Henri Masers de Latude, a French writer who is best known for his daring escapes from the Bastille and other prisons during the reign of Louis XV. Latude spent 35 years in various prisons after sending an anonymous letter to Madame de Pompadour as part of a hoax.
Antoine Vestier (1740–1824) was an 18th-century French portraitist who gained recognition for his work among the French nobility and the burgeoning bourgeoisie. His portraits are characterized by their detailed representation of fabrics and textures, as well as the subtle rendering of his subjects' characters.
The portrait of Latude is significant not only for its artistic qualities but also for its historical context. Painted in the same year as the outbreak of the French Revolution, the portrait captures Latude at the age of 64, after his final release from imprisonment. The work is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of injustice and adversity.
Latude's life story, which includes his numerous escape attempts and his eventual release due to public outcry, became a symbol of the arbitrary and oppressive nature of the Ancien Régime, and his portrait by Vestier serves as a poignant reminder of the individual lives affected by the political and social upheavals of the time.
The painting is part of the collection of the Musée Carnavalet in Paris, which is dedicated to the history of the city and holds many works of art related to significant figures and events in Parisian history. The portrait of Latude by Vestier is an important cultural artifact that provides insight into the pre-revolutionary period in France and the genre of portraiture during the late 18th century.
