Painting Description
Alfred Thompson Bricher (April 10, 1837 – September 30, 1908) was a prominent American painter associated with the second generation of the Hudson River School and the Luminism movement. Born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Bricher was largely self-taught but briefly studied art in Boston. He initially worked as a businessman but eventually devoted himself fully to painting by the mid-1860s.
Bricher's oeuvre primarily consists of coastal landscapes, reflecting his fascination with the New England seashore. He was particularly adept at capturing the interplay of light on water, a hallmark of Luminist aesthetics, which emphasized tranquility and the meticulous depiction of nature. Throughout his career, Bricher traveled extensively along the Atlantic coast from Maine to New Jersey, meticulously painting shorelines, seascapes, and maritime activities.
His works were regularly exhibited at prestigious institutions such as the National Academy of Design and the Boston Art Club, contributing significantly to the art scene of his time. Despite the shift in artistic trends towards Modernism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Bricher remained committed to his Luminist and realistic style until his death in New York City in 1908. Today, Alfred Thompson Bricher's paintings are celebrated for their technical precision and serene beauty, and they continue to be featured in major museums and collections across the United States.
