Born on January 18, 1878, in Craiova, Romania, he was part of the wave of Romanian artists who sought to develop a national artistic identity through their work. Hentia's artistic journey began with his studies at the National School of Fine Arts in Bucharest, where he was taught by some of the leading Romanian artists of the time.

During his career, Hentia furthered his studies abroad, which was a common practice among Romanian artists of his era who wished to absorb European artistic trends and techniques. He spent time in Munich and Paris, which were major centers for art education and avant-garde movements at the time.
