He was a part of the third generation of the School of Barbizon, a group of artists who favored painting en plein air (outdoor painting) and focused on the natural landscape. Nozal was particularly known for his portrayal of the French countryside, rivers, and rural scenes, often capturing the changing effects of light and atmosphere in his works.

Nozal studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and was a student of the renowned landscape painter Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, who was a pivotal figure in landscape painting and an inspiration for the later Impressionists. Nozal's early works show the influence of his teacher, especially in his delicate rendering of light and his choice of subtle, muted color palettes.

Throughout his career, Alexandre Nozal exhibited his works at the Paris Salon, an official art exhibition of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His paintings were well-received, and he gained recognition as a talented landscape artist.
