Alexandre Bida was a noted French painter known for his Orientalist works and illustrations of the Bible. Born on March 2, 1813, in Toulouse, France, Bida was the son of a French army officer. He showed an early interest in art and went on to study under Eugène Delacroix, who was a prominent Orientalist painter of the time. Bida's exposure to Delacroix's work, as well as his own travels in the Middle East, heavily influenced his artistic direction.

In 1839, Bida traveled to Greece and the Ottoman Empire, where he sketched scenes of everyday life as well as historic locations. His travels provided him with a wealth of inspiration for his works, which were characterized by their attention to detail and the use of dramatic lighting effects. Bida's Orientalist scenes were not just exotic landscapes; they often included intimate glimpses into the lives of the people he encountered, offering a perspective that was both respectful and insightful.

Bida is perhaps best known for his illustrations of the Bible, which were widely acclaimed for their innovative approach and historical accuracy. His most famous work in this genre is a series of illustrations for an 1873 edition of the Bible, which was published with the title 'La Sainte Bible: Ancien Testament'. Throughout his career, Bida exhibited at the Paris Salon and received favorable reviews from critics.
