Painting Description
Die Kleine Passion, also known as The Small Passion, is a series of 37 woodcuts created by the German Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer between 1509 and 1511. This collection is one of Dürer's most significant contributions to the art of printmaking and is renowned for its intricate detail, emotional depth, and innovative use of the woodcut medium. The series depicts the Passion of Christ, a central theme in Christian art, which narrates the events leading up to and including the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Dürer's Die Kleine Passion stands out for its compact format, with each woodcut measuring approximately 12.5 x 9.5 cm (5 x 3.75 inches). Despite their small size, the prints are remarkable for their meticulous craftsmanship and the expressive power of their imagery. Dürer’s ability to convey complex narratives and profound emotional states within such confined spaces is a testament to his mastery of the woodcut technique.
The series begins with scenes from the Old Testament, including the Fall of Man, to establish the theological context for the Passion. It then progresses through the New Testament, illustrating key moments from the life of Christ, such as the Last Supper, the Agony in the Garden, the Betrayal by Judas, the Trial before Pilate, the Crucifixion, and the Resurrection. Each image is accompanied by Latin verses, enhancing the devotional and didactic purposes of the work.
Die Kleine Passion was published in 1511, along with a Latin commentary by Benedictine monk Benedictus Chelidonius, which provided theological insights and reflections on the depicted scenes. The series was highly influential and widely disseminated, contributing to Dürer's reputation as one of the foremost artists of his time. It remains a significant example of Northern Renaissance art and continues to be studied for its artistic and historical importance.
