He was primarily known for his watercolour landscapes and cityscapes that reflected a penchant for capturing everyday life with a delicate and sensitive approach. His works often portrayed the serene and idyllic Dutch countryside, as well as urban scenes of the Netherlands.

Chris Terhell was initially trained at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, where he was influenced by the Hague School of painters, a group known for their realistic depictions of the Dutch landscape. However, Terhell's style also showed the influence of Impressionism, with a lighter palette and a focus on the effects of light and atmosphere. He was particularly adept at using watercolours, a medium that allowed him to express the transitory moods of the scenes he depicted.
