Painting Description
The "Tabula Rogeriana," also known as the "Book of Roger" or "Kitab Rujar," is a highly significant historical map of the world created by the Arab geographer Abu Muhammad Al-Idrisi (also known as Edrisi). Commissioned in 1154 by the Norman King Roger II of Sicily, Al-Idrisi's map and accompanying text, the "Nuzhat al-mushtāq fi'khtirāq al-āfāq" (The delight of him who desires to journey through the climates), represent a monumental work in the history of cartography and geography.
Al-Idrisi's map was groundbreaking for its time, integrating the knowledge of the Arab and Muslim worlds with that of the classical Greek and Roman scholars. The map is oriented with the South at the top, reflecting the Islamic tradition of maps at the time. It is known for its remarkable accuracy given the period in which it was produced, with detailed information on various regions of the world, including Europe, Asia, and Africa.
The map and the accompanying text are divided into seven climate zones, each further subdivided into ten sections, reflecting the classical understanding of geography. Al-Idrisi drew on a wide range of sources, including firsthand accounts from travelers and explorers, to compile a comprehensive picture of the known world. His work was not only a cartographic achievement but also an encyclopedic record of the various cultures, economic resources, and political entities of the time.
The "Tabula Rogeriana" remained one of the most accurate maps of the world until the age of exploration and the new cartographic advancements that followed. Al-Idrisi's work had a lasting impact on both the Islamic and European worlds, influencing later mapmakers and geographers. The original map no longer exists, but several manuscript copies and derivatives have survived, attesting to the widespread influence and value of Al-Idrisi's work in the medieval period.
