His early career was spent in London and Dublin, where he established himself as a talented portrait painter.

In 1802, seeking new opportunities and inspired by the lure of the East, Chinnery moved to India. He spent several years in Madras (now Chennai) and Calcutta (now Kolkata), where he captured the lives and landscapes of British India with his brush. His work from this period is notable for its detailed depiction of the social and domestic life of the time, making him a valuable source for historical and cultural research.

In 1825, Chinnery relocated to China, where he would spend the remainder of his life. He settled first in Canton (Guangzhou) and later in Macau. Chinnery's paintings from this period provide a unique visual record of Chinese and expatriate life in the Pearl River Delta before the Opium Wars. He was particularly adept at capturing the bustling port scenes, local Chinese villagers, and European merchants. His work is characterized by its vivid realism, attention to detail, and sensitivity to light and atmosphere.

George Chinnery's influence extended beyond his own work through his role as a teacher and mentor to local artists, thereby contributing to the development of Western-style painting in East Asia. Despite his significant contribution to the art of the region, Chinnery's work was somewhat forgotten after his death in Macau on May 30, 1852. However, in recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in his work, recognizing him as a key figure in cross-cultural artistic exchange between the West and Asia.
