Painting Description
Madonna and Child with Saints Stephen and Ursula" is a tempera on panel painting created by Italian artist Di Nardo Mariotto. The artwork, executed in the Late Middle Ages style, dates back to circa 1394–1450. The painting beautifully showcases Mariotto's dedication to detail and his ability to deliver depth within his depictions.
The artwork features the Virgin Mary and Child Jesus at the center, flanked by Saints Stephen and Ursula. Each figure has been painted in a manner highlights their holiness and significance within Christian ideology. The Virgin Mary is seen holding the child Christ, who looks towards Saint Ursula. Saint Stephen, holding a book and a martyr's palm, gazes directly at the viewer, while Saint Ursula, shown with her attribute, the ship, looks toward the Virgin and Child.
This painting is an excellent example of Di Nardo Mariotto's religious works. Mariotto, active mainly in Florence, was a recognized master of depicting holy scenes with atmospheric depth and high detail level. He created a number of works for both public and private devotion, and "Madonna and Child with Saints Stephen and Ursula" stands as evidence of his talent and contribution to religious art in the Middle Ages.
The painting, along with many of the artist's works, is now preserved and displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, where it continues to inspire and captivate audiences with its blend of spiritual grandeur and refined artistic techniques.
