Painting Description
"The Actor Bando Jusaburo" is a Japanese woodblock print derived from the artistry of Yamamura Toyonari (also known as Yamamura Kōka), a renowned artist most recognized for his contributions to the field of Japanese visual art in the early 20th century. Born in 1885, Yamamura was highly praised for his magnificent works that reflected the traditions of Ukiyo-e, a genre of Japanese art that flourished from the 17th to 19th centuries.
"The Actor B Jusaburo" is a prime example of 'shin hanga', a new artistic movement Toyonari was involved in, which sought to revitalize traditional Ukiyo-e art in a modern context. This print, like many of Toyonari's, focuses on a figure from the Kabuki theatre, in this case, the accomplished actor Bando Jusaburo.
Emulating the Kabuki tradition of male actors portraying female roles (onnagata), Jusaburo is depicted dressed in an intricate, vibrant kimono which showcases Toyonari's meticulous sense of detail. The artist's ability to portray the fabric's luminosity, as well as the luxurious patterns, demonstrates a masterful use of the 'nishiki-e' (brocade print) technique commonly found in Ukiyo-e art.
The print is part of Toyonari's broader 'bijin-ga' (beautiful person) series, presenting Bando Jusaburo in a moment of quiet solitude. His portrait reflects the elegant characteristics and spirit of his theatrical role onstage, displaying the harmonious blending of a reserved humanity and the poised grandeur of the Kabuki stage evidenced in Toyonari's work.
The print is known for its delicate representation and subtle coloring, hallmarks of Toyonari's work, and is a notable piece in his bijin-ga series. Through his distinct interpretation and depiction of Kabuki actors, Yamamura Toyonari holds a significant place in the shin hanga movement and the wider sphere of Japanese visual art.
