Painting Description
"Smolensko" is an aquatint engraving by the British artist William Ward (1766–1826), after a painting by James Ward. Created in the early 19th century, this work depicts the thoroughbred racehorse Smolensko, a celebrated stallion of its time. Smolensko, sired by Sorcerer out of Wowski, was born in 1810 and became renowned for his racing prowess, particularly after winning the 2000 Guineas and the Epsom Derby in 1813.
William Ward, an eminent engraver and mezzotint artist, was known for his skill in translating paintings into prints that could be widely distributed, thereby making the images of famous racehorses like Smolensko accessible to a broader audience. His works often captured the grace and power of these animals, contributing to the era's burgeoning culture of horse racing and breeding.
The aquatint process, a variant of etching, allowed for the creation of prints with tonal variations that resembled watercolor paintings. This technique was particularly suited to the representation of animals and landscapes, enabling artists like Ward to produce images with depth and texture that emphasized the muscular form and dynamic presence of the horse.
"Smolensko" by William Ward is an important work within the context of British equine art, reflecting both the cultural significance of horse racing in the United Kingdom and the technical artistry of printmaking during the period. The print serves as a historical document of the time, showcasing the lineage and legacy of a notable racehorse while also exemplifying the craftsmanship of the artist.
