Painting Description
''Marriage A-la-Mode'' is a series of six pictures painted by William Hogarth between 1743 and 1745 that serve as a pointed skewering of 18th-century society. This satirical narrative cycle depicts the story of the arranged marriage between the son of a financially depleted nobleman, the Earl of Squanderfield, and the daughter of a wealthy but socially inferior city merchant. The series serves as a scathing critique of the mercenary marriages common among the English aristocracy of the time, where financial and social gains were often prioritized over affection and compatibility.
The paintings follow the lives of the ill-matched couple, portraying the moral decay and sordid dealings of both the aristocracy and the nouveau riche. Hogarth's incisive wit and attention to detail illustrate the disastrous consequences of marrying for money rather than love, leading to infidelity, moral degeneration, and ultimately tragedy for all involved.
The first painting, ''Marriage A-la-Mode: 1. The Marriage Settlement,'' sets the scene with the negotiation of the marriage contract. Subsequent paintings in the series, including ''The Tête à Tête,'' ''The Inspection,'' ''The Toilette,'' ''The Bagnio,'' and ''The Lady's Death,'' depict the subsequent stages of the couple's life together, culminating in the death of both the Viscount and his wife.
Hogarth's ''Marriage A-la-Mode'' is not only a masterpiece of genre painting but also a pioneering work of sequential art that tells a story through a series of connected images. The series is lauded for its rich narrative complexity, vivid characterizations, and its layered, ironic commentary on the society of the time. The original paintings are part of the National Gallery's collection in London, while engravings made by Hogarth himself brought the series' moral lessons to a broader audience, securing its place as one of the most significant and influential works in British art history.
