Painting Description
"The Inspection" is one of the four paintings in the series "Marriage A-la-Mode" created by the English painter and printmaker William Hogarth. Painted in 1743, this series is a satirical portrayal of the upper-class society of Hogarth's time, particularly focusing on arranged marriages for social and financial gain. "The Inspection" is the third painting in the sequence and continues the narrative of the ill-fated marriage between the son of a bankrupt Earl and the daughter of a wealthy but socially inferior merchant.
In "The Inspection," Hogarth depicts a scene in a doctor's office, where the Viscount, the main male character, is being treated for a venereal disease, highlighting the moral decay and hypocrisy of the aristocracy. The Viscount is accompanied by a young woman, who is not his wife, further emphasizing the themes of infidelity and moral corruption. The doctor, a quack, is shown examining a flask of the Viscount's urine, and the room is filled with various medical paraphernalia, which Hogarth uses to ridicule the state of medical practices at the time.
The painting is rich in symbolism and detail, with Hogarth using visual cues to criticize the societal norms and to tell the story of the consequences of marrying for convenience rather than love. "The Inspection," like the other paintings in the series, was designed to be reproduced as a set of engravings, making the moral lessons and satirical commentary accessible to a wider audience.
As with the other works in the "Marriage A-la-Mode" series, "The Inspection" is held in high regard for its intricate composition, its narrative depth, and its critical perspective on 18th-century English society. The painting is part of the collection at the National Gallery in London, where it continues to be studied and appreciated for its artistic and historical significance.
