Painting Description
"Night" is the second in the series of four paintings known as the "Four Times of the Day" by the English artist William Hogarth, created in 1736. The series is a progression of scenes depicting the streets of London at different times of the day, and "Night" portrays the chaotic and rowdy atmosphere of the city after dark.
In "Night," Hogarth illustrates the raucous activities that take place in the Covent Garden area at the end of a long day. The painting is set outside the Rummer Tavern, near the church of St Paul's, Covent Garden, and the scene is illuminated by the glow of a fire, adding to the dramatic effect. The central figure is a drunken Freemason, who can be identified by his apron and the square and compasses emblem, being helped home by a watchman. The surrounding characters include a pie seller, a group of musicians, and a man whose wig has caught fire from a candle he is carrying, all contributing to the sense of disarray and humor characteristic of Hogarth's work.
"Night" is a satirical commentary on the excesses and vices of London society, with Hogarth using his keen observational skills to capture the spirit of the times. The painting is notable for its vivid depiction of the urban landscape and its critique of the social issues of the 18th century. As with the other paintings in the series, "Night" is a fine example of Hogarth's ability to blend fine art with social commentary, making it an important work in the canon of British art history.
The "Four Times of the Day" series was well-received in Hogarth's time and remains significant today for its artistry and its historical value, providing insight into the daily life and social customs of 18th-century London. "Night" and its companion pieces are held in various collections and continue to be studied and appreciated for their wit, detail, and commentary on human nature.
