Painting Description
''Marriage A-la-Mode: 4. The Toilette'' is the fourth painting in the ''Marriage A-la-Mode'' series by English painter William Hogarth. Created in the mid-18th century, this series of six paintings was designed as a pointed satire of the upper-class society of Hogarth's time, particularly arranged marriages and their often disastrous consequences. The paintings were later engraved and published, allowing for a wider audience to engage with Hogarth's social commentary.
In ''The Toilette'', Hogarth continues to chronicle the disintegration of the marriage between the Viscount Squanderfield, the son of an impoverished Earl, and the daughter of a wealthy but miserly merchant. The scene is set in the Viscountess's opulent dressing room, where she is being attended to by servants and fawned upon by guests, including a lawyer Silvertongue, while her husband is conspicuously absent. The room is filled with fashionable and exotic items, reflecting the taste for imported luxury goods at the time, but also suggesting the moral corruption and superficiality of the characters depicted.
The painting is rich in satirical detail, including a coronet on the floor, which symbolizes the Viscountess's disregard for her noble status, and a mirror that reflects a black pageboy, hinting at the exoticism that was fashionable among the upper classes. The presence of Silvertongue, who is seen whispering to the Viscountess, and the discarded legal documents on the floor, suggest an illicit affair and the potential for scandal.
''The Toilette'' is a key part of Hogarth's narrative arc in ''Marriage A-la-Mode'', serving as a critical examination of the vanity, adultery, and the decay of moral values among the aristocracy. The series as a whole is considered one of Hogarth's masterpieces and remains an important example of 18th-century genre painting, offering a window into the social mores and concerns of the period. The original paintings are held by the National Gallery in London, where they continue to be studied and appreciated for their artistic merit and historical significance.
