Painting Description
avinia Fenton (1708-1760) was an English actress renowned for her seminal role as Polly Peachum in the original 1728 production of John Gay’s "The Beggar Opera". The production, a biting social satire that contrasted the lower socio-economic classes with the high society of the period, was introduced to the stage by theatre and dramatist, John Rich.
Fenton's vivacious and passionate portrayal of Polly Peachum, a girl of virtue amidst a society steeped in criminality, garnered her both critical acclaim and public adulation. She brought Polly Peachum to life with a complex duality of innocence and daring, embodying the character’s inner strength and romantic spirit. Her notable performances of the musical's songs left the audiences entranced, heightening the play's popularity and ensuring its status as one of the most significant works of eighteenth-century theatre.
In 1728, during the run of "The Beggar's Opera", the distinguished artist William Hogarth painted the principal characters of the play, capturing Lavinia Fenton in her star-making role. The painting played its part in immortalizing Fenton's performance, providing a visual representation that complemented her dramatic and vocal talents.
Following her success in "The Beggar's Opera", Fenton retired from the stage to marry Charles Powlett, 3rd Duke of Bolton, who had seen her on the opening night and had been captivated by her performance. Henceforth, Fenton led a life of nobility, but her spirited portrayal of Polly Peachum continues to be remembered, signifying her enduring impact on the realm of English theatre.
