Painting Description
"An Election" is a series of four oil paintings and later engravings by English artist William Hogarth. The series, created between1754 and 1755, offers a satirical commentary on the election of a member of parliament in Oxfordshire 1754. Hogarth demystifies the corrupt practices of the electoral process of the 18th century, exploring themes around political manipulation and bribery.
The first painting, "An Election Entertainment," features the Whig campaigners' raucous banquet, with guests indulging in excesses as unnoticed violence occurs outside the window. The second, "Canvassing for Votes," portrays a scene at the Rose and Crown Inn, with voters being obviously bribed by the agents from both parties.
In the third piece, "The Polling," Hogarth critiques the dubious and lenient criteria for the suffrage rights of that era. The scene highlights the voters' various conditions, with some being obviously unfit or unqualified. The final painting, "Chairing the Member," showcases a victorious candidate being perilously paraded around the town, amidst chaotic and often dangerous revelry.
"An Election" is generally appreciated for its keen social commentary and poignant examination of the democratic process. These works are currently held by Sir John Soane's Museum in London.
