Painting Description
"A Harlot's Progress" is a series of six paintings (1731) and engravings (1732) created by the English artist William Hogarth, which serve as a moral and social commentary on the life of a young woman who arrives in London and becomes a prostitute. The series is considered one of Hogarth's major works and marks a significant contribution to the development of narrative art, as well as the use of sequential art to tell a story. Each scene depicts a different stage in the tragic life of the protagonist, Moll Hackabout, from her arrival in London to her untimely death from venereal disease.
The series begins with Moll arriving in Cheapside, London, where she is quickly seduced into a life of prostitution. Subsequent scenes show her rise and fall within the social hierarchy of the time, including her time as the mistress of a wealthy merchant, her arrest and imprisonment, and her decline into disease and death. The final scene depicts Moll's grim funeral, attended by disreputable characters, highlighting the consequences of her choices and the harsh realities of 18th-century urban life.
Hogarth's work is notable for its rich detail, satirical edge, and the complex interplay of moral, social, and emotional themes. "A Harlot's Progress" not only critiques the moral decay of society but also sympathetically portrays the victimization of women in a patriarchal system. The series was immensely popular in its time, leading to widespread pirating of the images and contributing to Hogarth's decision to push for the Copyright Act of 1735, which granted copyright protection to creators.
Through "A Harlot's Progress," Hogarth pioneered a form of pictorial storytelling that influenced the development of the modern comic strip and graphic novel. The series remains a valuable historical document, offering insight into 18th-century London's social conditions, attitudes, and vices. It also established Hogarth as one of the foremost artists of his time, capable of weaving complex narratives that engage with the moral, social, and political issues of his day.
