Painting Description
''A Harlot's Progress'' is a series of six paintings (1731) and engravings (1732) created by the English artist William Hogarth. The series depicts the story of a young woman, Moll Hackabout, who arrives in London from the countryside and becomes a prostitute. The narrative arc of ''A Harlot's Progress'' is a moral and cautionary tale showing the decline and fall of a woman who succumbs to the temptations and vices of the city.
Hogarth's work is notable for its vivid characterisation and its detailed depiction of the sordid aspects of urban life in 18th-century London. The series is considered a pioneering form of sequential art, akin to a modern graphic novel, and is one of Hogarth's most famous works, alongside ''A Rake's Progress'' and ''Marriage A-la-Mode''. The paintings were destroyed in a fire at Fonthill Abbey in 1755, but the engravings, which Hogarth produced and sold the following year, survive and are how the series is best known today.
The narrative begins with Moll's arrival in London at Cheapside and follows her through a series of misfortunes including prostitution, arrest, and death from venereal disease. Each plate is packed with detail and symbolism, reflecting Hogarth's critical eye for the social issues of his time, including the corruption of innocence, the consequences of lax morality, and the impact of urbanization.
''A Harlot's Progress'' was both a commercial and critical success for Hogarth, and it helped to establish his reputation as a fine artist in Britain. The series also had a significant impact on the public and was instrumental in leading to the establishment of the Foundling Hospital, a charitable institution for which Hogarth later became a benefactor and governor. The work has been extensively analyzed by art historians and has been the subject of numerous exhibitions, demonstrating its enduring legacy and importance in the canon of British art.
