Painting Description
"A Harlot's Progress" is a series of six paintings (1731) and engravings (1732) created by the English artist William Hogarth, which serve as a moralistic and satirical commentary on the life of an urban prostitute in 18th-century London. Plate 1 of this series introduces the protagonist, Moll Hackabout, as she arrives in London at Cheapside's Bell Inn. The scene is set with Moll being greeted by the bawd Mother Needham, who is inspecting her as a new recruit for her prostitution business. The young woman's innocence is symbolized by her white dress and the fact that she has just disembarked from a stagecoach, indicating her recent arrival from the countryside.
In the background, a clergyman is seen turning away from the scene, which can be interpreted as a critique of the church's indifference to moral decay. A goose, often a symbol of foolishness, spills out of Moll's bundle, further suggesting her naivety and the fate that awaits her. The presence of a leering man in the doorway, along with a black boy holding a box of pills, possibly referencing treatments for venereal disease, foreshadows the sexual exploitation and health risks that Moll will face.
Hogarth's work is renowned for its rich detail and layered symbolism, offering a glimpse into the social issues and vices of his time. "A Harlot's Progress, plate 1" sets the stage for the tragic narrative that unfolds throughout the series, as Moll Hackabout's descent into prostitution is chronicled with both empathy and moralizing judgement. The series was highly successful and contributed to Hogarth's reputation as a painter who could capture the complexities of human nature and society. The original paintings were destroyed in a fire in 1755, but the engravings, which Hogarth produced to reach a broader audience, have preserved the narrative and artistic significance of the series.
