Painting Description
"Visionary Head" is a term that refers to a series of drawings, paintings, and engravings by the English poet, painter, and printmaker William Blake (1757–1827). These works are characterized by their portrayal of historical, mythical, or supernatural figures, often with an emphasis on their spiritual or visionary aspects. Blake, a seminal figure in the history of the poetry and visual arts of the Romantic Age, was deeply influenced by his mystical visions and personal spiritual experiences, which he sought to express through his art.
The "Visionary Heads" were created during the later period of Blake's life, notably from around 1818 to 1825, when he was commissioned by the artist John Varley to produce a series of watercolors depicting various historical and mythical characters. Varley, fascinated by the supernatural, encouraged Blake to draw figures that appeared to him in visions during their late-night séances. These sessions often lasted through the night, with Blake claiming to see the subjects and render them as they appeared to his inner eye.
Among the notable "Visionary Heads" is a depiction of the ghost of a flea, which Blake claimed to have seen with his spiritual sight. This particular image is one of the most famous from the series and exemplifies Blake's unique blend of the real and the fantastical. The "Visionary Heads" also include representations of figures such as Solomon, Edward I, and Wat Tyler, among others.
Blake's "Visionary Heads" are significant for their reflection of his idiosyncratic and personal mythology, as well as for their exploration of the boundaries between perception, imagination, and spiritual vision. These works are held in various collections, including the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the British Museum in London. They continue to be studied for their artistic merit, as well as for their insight into Blake's complex and unorthodox worldview.
The "Visionary Heads" remain a testament to William Blake's unique position as an artist and visionary, whose work transcends simple categorization and continues to inspire and challenge audiences with its depth and mystical qualities.
