Painting Description
"Pity" is a color print finished in ink and watercolor created by the English poet, painter, and printmaker William Blake in 1795. Part of a series of large monotype works referred to as his "Large Colour Prints," the piece is based on a scene from William Shakespeare's play "Macbeth," Act 1, Scene 7. The image depicts a scene in which Macbeth is contemplating the murder of King Duncan, and it is believed that the figures represent the personifications of Pity as described by Macbeth in his soliloquy, where he refers to "Pity, like a naked new-born babe."
The work is a prime example of Blake's innovative printing techniques and his unique approach to art that combined his poetic and visual artistry. Blake's method involved laying the colors onto the paper with a brush, which was then pressed against another sheet to create the print, a process that allowed for a great deal of variation between different impressions of the same image.
"Pity" is characterized by its rich symbolism and dramatic imagery, which is typical of Blake's style. The central figure is a woman who appears to be floating in the air, holding a baby, while above her, a second baby is caught by a figure that may represent a guardian angel. The scene is set against a dark, foreboding background that suggests the ominous nature of Macbeth's thoughts and the tragedy that will ensue.
This work is currently held in the collection of the Tate Gallery in London. "Pity" is often analyzed within the context of Blake's personal mythology and his critical views on the moral, religious, and political issues of his time. It stands as a testament to Blake's mastery of color and composition, as well as his ability to infuse his art with profound intellectual and emotional depth.
