Painting Description
"Nebuchadnezzar" is a colour monotype print with additions in ink and watercolour created by the English artist and poet William Blake in 1795. Part of a series of prints known as the "Large Colour Prints," the work depicts the biblical story of Nebuchadnezzar II, the King of Babylon, as recounted in the Book of Daniel. According to the biblical narrative, Nebuchadnezzar was punished by God for his pride and arrogance, being driven from men to live with the beasts and to eat grass as oxen, his body wet with the dew of heaven, until he recognized that the Most High God ruled over the kingdom of men.
Blake's representation of Nebuchadnezzar is a powerful and dramatic illustration of the king's descent into madness and bestiality. The image shows the once-mighty king crawling on all fours, with wild hair and a long beard, his muscles and sinews sharply defined, and his eyes filled with a mix of rage and fear. This portrayal reflects Blake's interest in the spiritual and moral struggles of individuals, as well as his fascination with prophecy and the divine.
The print is notable for its expressive use of colour and innovative printmaking technique, which involved applying coloured inks to a copper plate with brushes and other tools before printing. This allowed Blake to achieve a painterly effect, making each print in the series unique. "Nebuchadnezzar" is considered one of Blake's most significant works, showcasing his skills as an artist and his deep engagement with themes of human fallibility, divine justice, and redemption.
The work is held in various collections, including the Tate Gallery in London, and continues to be a subject of study for its artistic merit and its complex interweaving of visual art with theological and literary themes. As with many of Blake's works, "Nebuchadnezzar" reflects the artist's idiosyncratic vision and his ability to blend his poetic and artistic talents to create images of enduring power and resonance.
