Painting Description
"Nabuchodonosor" is a color print finished in ink and watercolor created by the English artist and poet William Blake in 1795. Part of a series known as the "Large Colour Prints," the work depicts the biblical figure of Nebuchadnezzar II, the powerful king of Babylon, in a state of bestial madness as described in the Book of Daniel. The image is a visual interpretation of the king's divine punishment for his pride and arrogance, as he is reduced to living like an animal, crawling on all fours and eating grass.
Blake's "Nabuchodonosor" is characterized by its vivid imagery and dramatic use of color, which were innovative for the time and reflective of Blake's unique artistic and spiritual vision. The work is a striking example of Blake's engagement with biblical themes and his exploration of the interplay between the human and the divine, the material and the spiritual. It also showcases Blake's technical experimentation with relief etching, a method he called "Illuminated Printing," which allowed him to create a seamless blend of text and image.
The print is held in high regard for its artistic significance and is considered one of Blake's most powerful and evocative creations. It is housed in various collections, including the British Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. "Nabuchodonosor" continues to be studied for its complex symbolism, intricate craftsmanship, and its place within the broader context of Blake's oeuvre and the Romantic movement in art and literature.
