Painting Description
"Simson och Delila" (Samson and Delilah) is a painting by the Dutch Golden Age artist Willem de Poorter. This artwork depicts the biblical story of Samson and Delilah from the Book of Judges in the Old Testament, where Delilah, Samson's lover, is bribed by the Philistines to discover the secret of his strength, which lies in his uncut hair. The painting captures the moment Delilah betrays Samson by having his hair cut while he sleeps, thus enabling his capture by the Philistines.
Willem de Poorter (1608 – ca. 1648/49) was known for his small-scale history paintings and was active in Haarlem, where he was influenced by the works of Frans Hals and Pieter de Grebber. His paintings often feature elaborate costumes and interior settings, with attention to detail and use of chiaroscuro to enhance the narrative drama of the scenes depicted.
"Simson och Delila" is characteristic of de Poorter's style, showcasing his skill in rendering textures and materials, as well as his ability to convey a story through composition and the interplay of light and shadow. The painting is an example of the themes of love, betrayal, and the consequences of human weakness that were popular in the art of the Dutch Golden Age.
The exact date of creation for "Simson och Delila" is not well-documented, and the painting's provenance has not been thoroughly established, which is not uncommon for works from this period. As such, the painting's history prior to its current location or ownership may be incomplete. Nevertheless, "Simson och Delila" remains an important work within Willem de Poorter's oeuvre, contributing to our understanding of the artistic and cultural narratives of the 17th century in the Netherlands.
