Painting Description
"Na Pełnym Morzu" (On the High Seas) is a one-act play by the Polish playwright Sławomir Mrożek. It was first published in 1961 and is one of Mrożek's most famous works, exemplifying his style of grotesque comedy and absurdity. The play is set on a raft adrift in the middle of the ocean, carrying three men—a Gentleman, a Writer, and a Sailor—who have survived a shipwreck. As they face the prospect of starvation, the men engage in a macabre debate over who should be sacrificed and eaten to allow the others to survive.
The play explores themes of civilization versus savagery, power dynamics, and human nature under extreme conditions. Mrożek uses the confined space of the raft and the life-and-death situation to satirize social structures and the thin veneer of civility that can quickly erode when survival is at stake. The characters represent different societal roles and philosophies, and their interactions raise questions about morality, ethics, and the social contract.
"Na Pełnym Morzu" has been widely studied in literary circles and has seen numerous stage productions around the world. It is often praised for its incisive wit, its dark humor, and its ability to provoke thought about the human condition. The play remains relevant as it continues to be performed and analyzed, reflecting the enduring nature of its themes and its place in the canon of modern absurdist literature.
