Painting Description
"Meeting of the Betrothed Couple and the Departure of the Pilgrims" is a renowned painting by the Italian Renaissance artist Vittore Carpaccio, created as part of the famous cycle of canvases depicting the legend of Saint Ursula. This particular work, also known as "The Departure of the Betrothed Couple," is one of a series of nine large panels painted by Carpaccio for the Scuola di Sant'Orsola (Confraternity of Saint Ursula) in Venice between 1490 and 1495. The cycle tells the story of Saint Ursula, a British princess, and her Christian companions.
This detail from the cycle illustrates two distinct episodes from the legend. On the left, the betrothal scene shows Ursula with her fiancé, the pagan prince Conan Meriadoc of Armorica, amidst a gathering of nobles and courtiers. The right side of the painting depicts the departure of Ursula and her 11,000 virgin companions on a pilgrimage to Rome before her marriage. Carpaccio's work is celebrated for its vivid narrative quality and meticulous attention to detail, which is evident in the richly adorned costumes, the intricate architectural elements, and the bustling activity of the Venetian port in the background.
The painting is a prime example of Carpaccio's mastery in blending religious themes with the contemporary life of Venice, offering a glimpse into the city's social and cultural milieu at the turn of the 16th century. The work is currently housed in the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice, where it continues to be studied and admired for its historical significance and artistic beauty.
