Painting Description
"Life of St. Jerome: Vision of St. Augustine (Storie di san Gerolamo: Visione di sant'Agostino) is an early 16th-century oil painting by Italian Renaissance artist Vittore Carpaccio. The artwork forms part of a cycle of nine paintings illustrating the life of St. Jerome, commissioned for Scuola di San Giorgio degliiavoni in Venice Italy.
The scene presents a narrative from ‘The Golden Legend,’ where Saint Augustine, depicted to the left side of the painting, receives a vision of the death of Saint Jerome. He is shown studying, surrounded by symbolic objects while his attention is caught by the heavenly apparition. Around the theme of death and ascension, Carpaccio has skillfully woven elements of scholarly life, creating an atmosphere of serene contemplation.
Carpaccio's emphasis on detail, visible in the intricate rendering of objects and architectural forms, is characteristic of his style. The painting's narrative depth and the artist's meticulous detailing of the environment, indicative of his Northern European influences, all contribute to its distinguished place in Venetian Renaissance art.
Despite its age and delicate fabric, the painting remains in relatively good condition. Today, the work continues to be exhibited at the Scuola di San Giorgio degli Schiavoni."
