Painting Description
"The Good Samaritan (after Delacroix)" is an oil painting created by Dutch post-impressionist artist Vincent van Gogh in 1890, during his stay at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France. This work is a reinterpretation of a painting by the French Romantic artist Eugène Delacroix, which itself was inspired by the parable of the Good Samaritan from the Bible. Van Gogh's version is a testament to his admiration for Delacroix, whose use of color and expressive brushwork had a significant influence on Van Gogh's own artistic development.
Measuring 73 x 60 cm, Van Gogh's painting is characterized by its vibrant color palette and dynamic brushstrokes, which imbue the scene with emotional intensity. The composition depicts the moment when the Good Samaritan, a figure from a parable told by Jesus in the Gospel of Luke, comes to the aid of a traveler who has been stripped, beaten, and left for dead by the roadside. In contrast to the priest and Levite who pass by without helping, the Samaritan is moved by compassion and provides assistance.
Van Gogh's interpretation of Delacroix's original work is both a homage and a personal exploration of the theme of human kindness and charity. The painting reflects Van Gogh's ongoing struggle with mental illness and his search for solace through art and the human condition. The Good Samaritan (after Delacroix) is part of a series of copies that Van Gogh made after works by artists he admired, which allowed him to study their techniques and incorporate elements into his own style.
Today, "The Good Samaritan (after Delacroix)" is held in the collection of the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo, Netherlands, and remains an important example of Van Gogh's late work and his enduring legacy as one of the most influential figures in the history of Western art.
