Painting Description
"Sorrow" is a notable work by the Dutch post-impressionist artist Vincent van Gogh, created in 1882 during his early period in The Hague. This drawing, distinct from Van Gogh's later, more famous, post-impressionist paintings, exemplifies his early exploration of the human condition, themes of poverty, and social realism. The artwork features a sorrowful figure, Clasina Maria Hoornik, known as Sien, a pregnant woman and prostitute whom Van Gogh took in both as a model and a companion during his time in The Hague.
Measuring 44.5 cm × 27.0 cm, "Sorrow" is executed in pencil, black chalk, pen, and brush on paper. It is a testament to Van Gogh's skill in capturing human emotion and his empathy for the marginalized sectors of society. The drawing's composition, with Sien's bowed head and the use of shadow, conveys a deep sense of melancholy and introspection. Van Gogh's letters to his brother Theo reveal that he saw this work as a significant achievement, considering it among his best drawings at the time. He believed that through such works, he could contribute to what he saw as the true purpose of art: to express sincere human emotion and to sympathize with the human plight.
"Sorrow" not only provides insight into Van Gogh's artistic development but also into his personal life and the complex relationships he had with the subjects of his art. The drawing remains a poignant reflection of Van Gogh's compassion and his commitment to depicting the realities of human suffering and endurance. Today, "Sorrow" is held in the collection of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, serving as a crucial piece in understanding the evolution of one of the most celebrated artists in the history of Western art.
