Painting Description
''Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear'' is an 1889 painting by Dutch post-impressionist artist Vincent van Gogh. Created shortly after a severe episode in which the artist mutilated his own left ear, the work is a poignant reflection of Van Gogh's mental state during one of the most turbulent periods of his life. The painting is executed in oil on canvas and measures 60 cm x 49 cm. It is currently housed in the Courtauld Gallery in London.
In the self-portrait, Van Gogh is depicted with a bandage covering his left ear, which he severed in December 1888, following a confrontation with fellow artist Paul Gauguin. This event marked the beginning of a series of mental breakdowns that would plague Van Gogh until his death in 1890. The artist's choice to portray himself in this manner is significant, as it not only documents his physical state but also serves as a stark symbol of his psychological suffering.
Van Gogh's use of color and brushwork in the painting is characteristic of his post-impressionist style. The swirling background and the vivid, contrasting hues of his jacket and the bandage create a sense of emotional intensity and turbulence. Despite the turmoil suggested by these elements, Van Gogh's gaze is calm and resolute, indicating a degree of self-awareness and introspection.
The self-portrait is one of many that Van Gogh painted throughout his career, but it stands out for its raw depiction of personal tragedy and its insight into the artist's fragile state of mind. It remains one of the most iconic and revealing works of Van Gogh's oeuvre, offering a deeply human perspective on the struggles of one of the most celebrated figures in the history of art.
