Painting Description
''Pieta'' is an artwork by the Dutch post-impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh. It was completed in September 1889, less than a year before his death. The painting is a re-imagined depiction of a lithograph by the French artist Eugène Delacroix, which itself was a representation of Michelangelo's famous sculpture, the ''Pietà''. Van Gogh's version, however, is not a direct copy; he interpreted the composition in his own style, characterized by expressive brushwork and bold use of color.
The painting shows the body of Jesus on the lap of his mother Mary after the Crucifixion. Van Gogh's rendition is notable for its emotional intensity and the way in which it reflects his own anguish. The artist was in the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France, at the time he painted the ''Pieta''. The work is a poignant example of how Van Gogh found solace in religion and art during his periods of mental turmoil.
Van Gogh's ''Pieta'' is executed in oil on canvas and measures 41.5 cm × 34 cm (16.3 in × 13.4 in). It is part of the collection at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. The painting is significant not only for its emotional depth but also for its place within Van Gogh's oeuvre, as it showcases the artist's continued engagement with the work of other artists and his ability to transform existing artworks into his own unique vision.
