Painting Description
"Japonaiserie (after Hiroshige)" is a series of artworks by Dutch post-impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh, created in 1887. The term "Japonaiserie" is derived from the French word for Japanese items or styles, reflecting the influence of Japanese art on European artists during the late 19th century, a period known as the Japonisme movement. Van Gogh's fascination with Japanese woodblock prints is evident in these works, which are reinterpretations of prints by the renowned Japanese artist Utagawa Hiroshige.
Van Gogh's engagement with Japonaiserie was part of a broader trend among European artists who were seeking new sources of inspiration and were drawn to the simplicity, boldness, and distinct aesthetic of Japanese art. This influence is particularly noticeable in the flat areas of color, the use of outlines, and the unconventional compositions that characterize these pieces.
The series includes three known works: "The Courtesan (after Eisen)," "Bridge in the Rain (after Hiroshige)," and "Flowering Plum Tree (after Hiroshige)." While "The Courtesan" is based on a work by Keisai Eisen, the other two are directly inspired by Hiroshige's prints. "Bridge in the Rain" is based on Hiroshige's "Sudden Shower over Shin-Ōhashi bridge and Atake," while "Flowering Plum Tree" is inspired by Hiroshige's "Plum Park in Kameido."
In creating these pieces, Van Gogh did not simply copy the originals but instead infused them with his own style and color palette, resulting in a vibrant and expressive homage that bridged Eastern and Western art. The Japonaiserie works are notable for their bold use of line and color, which would become hallmarks of Van Gogh's later, more famous works.
These pieces are significant not only for their aesthetic value but also for their role in the development of Van Gogh's artistic vision. They represent a pivotal moment in his career when he was actively experimenting with new sources of inspiration, leading to the unique style that would make him one of the most influential figures in the history of Western art. The Japonaiserie series is housed in various museums, with "Bridge in the Rain" and "Flowering Plum Tree" being part of the collection at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
