Painting Description
''Bedroom in Arles'' (French: La Chambre à Arles; Dutch: Slaapkamer te Arles) is the title given to each of three similar paintings by 19th-century Dutch Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh. Van Gogh's own title for this composition was simply ''The Bedroom'' (French: La Chambre à coucher). There are three authentic versions described in his letters, easily distinguishable from one another by the pictures on the wall to the right.
The painting depicts Van Gogh's bedroom at 2, Place Lamartine in Arles, Bouches-du-Rhône, France, known as the Yellow House. The door to the right opened on to the upper floor and the staircase; the door to the left was that of the guest room he held prepared for Gauguin. The window in the front wall looked out over Place Lamartine and its public gardens. This room was not rectangular but trapezoid with an obtuse angle in the left-hand corner of the front wall and an acute angle at the right.
Van Gogh evidently did not spend much time on this problem in his depiction of the interior of his room. The emphasis in his rendering is clearly on the colour contrasts and the delineation of the space with simple lines and forms. The perspective looks somewhat distorted, which is not due to the artist's lack of skill, but rather his desire to render a certain feeling of the space rather than an accurate depiction of it.
The first version, now in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, was executed in October 1888 and damaged during a flood while Van Gogh was in the hospital in Arles. Shortly after the first version, he made the second version, also in 1888, intended as a gift for his mother and sister. The second version is in the Art Institute of Chicago. The third version, which was made in September 1889 and is now in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, was intended to preserve the composition after the second version had to be sent to his family. In addition to these three versions, Van Gogh also made a lithograph of the composition, which was then used to create several prints in 1889.
The Bedroom at Arles is one of Van Gogh's most famous works and is notable for its bold colors, emotional honesty, and simple yet poignant depiction of his living space. The painting is often discussed in the context of Van Gogh's mental health, as well as his artistic approach to color and form. It remains a key piece for understanding the artist's life and work during his time in Arles, a period that was both highly productive and tumultuous.
