Painting Description
The High Altar of St. Mary, also known as the Altarpiece of Veit Stoss, is a monumental Gothic altarpiece created by the renowned German sculptor Veit Stoss between 1477 and 1489. Located in the St. Mary's Basilica in Kraków, Poland, this masterpiece is considered one of the most significant works of late Gothic art in Europe. The altarpiece stands at an impressive height of approximately 13 meters (42 feet) and is composed of intricately carved limewood, with some elements gilded and polychromed to enhance their visual impact.
The central theme of the altarpiece is the life of the Virgin Mary, with a particular focus on the Assumption and Coronation of the Virgin. The main panel, which is the focal point of the altarpiece, depicts the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, surrounded by the twelve Apostles. Above this scene, the Assumption of Mary is portrayed, with angels lifting her towards heaven. The uppermost section features the Coronation of the Virgin by the Holy Trinity, symbolizing her exaltation and divine motherhood.
Flanking the central panel are two pairs of movable wings, each adorned with scenes from the life of Mary and Jesus, including the Annunciation, Nativity, and the Adoration of the Magi. These wings can be opened and closed, allowing for different configurations and visual narratives depending on the liturgical calendar.
Veit Stoss's craftsmanship is evident in the meticulous attention to detail, the dynamic composition, and the expressive figures that convey a sense of movement and emotion. The altarpiece not only serves as a devotional object but also as a testament to the artistic and cultural achievements of the late medieval period in Central Europe.
Throughout its history, the High Altar of St. Mary has undergone several restorations, particularly after suffering damage during World War II. Today, it remains a central attraction in St. Mary's Basilica, drawing visitors and art enthusiasts from around the world who come to admire its beauty and historical significance.
