Painting Description
The High Altar of St. Mary, also known as the Altarpiece of Veit Stoss, is a monumental Gothic altarpiece located in the St. Mary's Basilica in Kraków, Poland. Created by the renowned German sculptor Veit Stoss between 1477 and 1489, this masterpiece is considered one of the most significant works of late Gothic art in Europe. The altarpiece stands at an impressive height of approximately 13 meters (42 feet) and a width of 11 meters (36 feet) when fully opened, making it the largest Gothic altarpiece in the world.
The central theme of the altarpiece is the life of the Virgin Mary, depicted through a series of intricately carved wooden figures and scenes. The central panel portrays the Dormition of the Virgin, surrounded by the twelve Apostles, with Mary being assumed into heaven. Above this, the Coronation of the Virgin is depicted, with Christ crowning Mary as the Queen of Heaven. The side panels, when opened, reveal additional scenes from the life of Mary and Jesus, including the Annunciation, the Nativity, and the Resurrection.
Veit Stoss's craftsmanship is evident in the detailed and expressive figures, which are carved from limewood and polychromed to enhance their lifelike appearance. The altarpiece also features an elaborate architectural framework, adorned with pinnacles, tracery, and other Gothic elements, which serve to frame and elevate the narrative scenes.
The High Altar of St. Mary has undergone several restorations over the centuries, particularly after suffering damage during World War II. Despite these challenges, it remains a central piece of Kraków's cultural and religious heritage, attracting countless visitors and art historians who come to admire its artistic and historical significance. The altarpiece not only exemplifies the technical prowess of Veit Stoss but also reflects the rich artistic traditions of the late medieval period in Central Europe.
