Painting Description
The High Altar of St Mary, also known as the Altarpiece of Veit Stoss, is a monumental Gothic altarpiece created by the renowned German sculptor Veit Stoss. This masterpiece, completed between 1477 and 1489, is located in the St. Mary's Basilica in Kraków, Poland. It stands as one of the most significant and impressive examples of late Gothic art in Europe, showcasing Stoss's exceptional skill in wood carving and his ability to convey intricate religious narratives through his work.
The altarpiece is constructed primarily from limewood, with some elements made from oak and linden. It measures approximately 13 meters in height and 11 meters in width when fully opened, making it one of the largest Gothic altarpieces in the world. The central panel of the altarpiece depicts the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, surrounded by the twelve Apostles. Above this scene, the Assumption of the Virgin is portrayed, culminating in the Coronation of the Virgin in the uppermost section. The side panels, when opened, reveal additional scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ, including the Annunciation, the Nativity, and the Adoration of the Magi.
Veit Stoss's work on the High Altar of St Mary is characterized by its dynamic composition, intricate detailing, and expressive figures. The altarpiece not only serves as a focal point for worship within the basilica but also as a testament to the artistic and cultural achievements of the late Middle Ages. Over the centuries, the altarpiece has undergone several restorations to preserve its intricate carvings and vibrant polychromy, ensuring that it continues to inspire and awe visitors from around the world.
