Painting Description
The High Altar of St. Mary, also known as the Altarpiece of Veit Stoss, is a monumental Gothic altarpiece created by the renowned German sculptor Veit Stoss between 1477 and 1489. This masterpiece is located in the Basilica of St. Mary (St. Mary's Church) in Kraków, Poland, and is considered one of the most important and impressive examples of late Gothic art in Europe.
The altarpiece stands at an imposing height of approximately 13 meters (42 feet) and spans 11 meters (36 feet) in width when fully opened. It is crafted from limewood and features an intricate combination of sculpture and painting. The central panel of the altarpiece depicts the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, surrounded by the twelve Apostles, capturing the moment of her death and assumption into heaven. Above this scene, the Coronation of the Virgin is depicted, showcasing her being crowned by Christ, God the Father, and the Holy Spirit.
The side panels of the altarpiece, which can be opened and closed, contain a series of scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ. These include the Annunciation, the Nativity, the Adoration of the Magi, and the Resurrection, among others. The detailed carvings and vivid polychrome painting of the figures demonstrate Stoss's exceptional skill in rendering human emotion and movement, making the altarpiece a dynamic and engaging work of art.
Veit Stoss, originally from Nuremberg, was commissioned by the city of Kraków to create this altarpiece, which took him over a decade to complete. His work on the High Altar of St. Mary not only solidified his reputation as a master sculptor but also significantly influenced the development of Gothic art in Central Europe.
The High Altar of St. Mary has undergone several restorations over the centuries, particularly after suffering damage during World War II. Today, it remains a focal point of St. Mary's Basilica and a testament to the artistic and cultural heritage of Kraków. Visitors from around the world come to admire its intricate craftsmanship and to experience the spiritual and historical significance of this extraordinary work of art.
