Painting Description
The High Altar of St Mary, also known as the Altar of the Doctors, is a monumental Gothic altarpiece created by the renowned German sculptor Veit Stoss. This masterpiece, completed between 1477 and 1489, is located in St. Mary's Basilica in Kraków, Poland. It is widely regarded as one of the most significant examples of late Gothic art in Europe and stands as a testament to Stoss's extraordinary skill and artistic vision.
The altarpiece is an intricate and elaborate work, measuring approximately 13 meters in height and 11 meters in width when fully opened. It is composed of a central panel and two movable wings, which allow it to be displayed in both open and closed positions. The central panel features a dramatic depiction of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, surrounded by the twelve apostles. Above this scene, the Assumption of Mary is portrayed, with the Virgin being lifted to heaven by a host of angels. The uppermost section of the altarpiece showcases the Coronation of the Virgin, where she is crowned by the Holy Trinity.
The wings of the altarpiece contain additional scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ, intricately carved and richly detailed. These include the Annunciation, the Nativity, the Adoration of the Magi, and the Presentation in the Temple. The reverse sides of the wings are painted with scenes from the Passion of Christ, adding another layer of narrative depth to the work.
Veit Stoss's use of polychromy and gilding enhances the visual impact of the altarpiece, creating a vibrant and luminous effect that draws the viewer's eye. The figures are rendered with remarkable realism and emotional expressiveness, capturing the spiritual intensity of the depicted events. The High Altar of St Mary not only serves as a focal point for worship but also as a cultural and historical treasure, reflecting the artistic and religious fervor of its time.
